Common Accidents and Incidents leading to Brain Injury Diagnosis

While any significant impact or trauma to the head could potentially result in a brain injury, some of the most common causes are:

An estimated 600,000 brain injuries per year are caused by slip/trip and fall accidents, and another 300,000 brain injuries are the result of traffic collisions.

Collision or impact leads to injuries through a process known as “diffuse axonal shearing,” wherein the force of the impact causes the brain to move inside of the skull and bounce off the bone.

Due to differences inconsistency, this causes axons (spinal and brain nerve cells) to tear or “shear” and neurons to die. Secondary and prolonged effects of an initial impact may cause further damage to the brain, such as hemorrhaging, oxygen deprivation (hypoxia,) and swell (cerebral edema.)

Signs and Symptoms of a Brain Injury

Initial signs and symptoms of a brain injury are numerous and can differ bases on the severity of the initial impact and the individual victim’s general health.

Common symptoms include:

  • Cognitive issues
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Constant headaches
  • Loss of executive functions, including decreased intellectual abilities
  • Behavioral changes, including the onset of personality disorders or psychiatric disorders like Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Loss of memory
  • Language disorders/ speech difficulties

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Those who sustain a traumatic brain injury must receive immediate treatment from neurologists to determine the exact cause, nature, and severity of the brain injury.

Due to the numerous causes and resulting types of brain injuries, the diagnostic process is extensive and often includes MRIs, CT or PET scans, electroencephalograms (checks for abnormalities in a record of electric brain activity,) memory, and cognitive tests, cranial nerve examinations, and more.

Here are the three main types of brain injuries:

  • Skull Fractures: Not all skull fractures require that the skin to be broken; as such, they are sometimes challenging to detect. Subtypes include linear fractures, depressed skull fractures, and compound skull fractures. External signs include swelling, bleeding or tenderness at the fracture site, bleeding or bruising beneath the eyes, behind the ears, or from the nasal cavities.  Neurologists prefer to use X-rays and CT scans for diagnosis.
  • Brain Hemorrhage: Internal bleeding resulting from a high—force impact to the head is called a brain hemorrhage (also known as a stroke.) These are common in slip and fall accidents, motorcycle accidents, and when the head is impacted by falling objects or debris.
  • Repetitive Brain Impact: Repeated blows to the head often result from involvement in sports activities including American football, soccer, boxing, MMA ice hockey, lacrosse, and other sports, as well as dangerous workplace conditions on construction sites and in manufacturing facilities.

Other Common Brain Injuries include

  • Mild to Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Diffuse Axonal Injury
  • Acquired Brain Injury
  • Closed Head Brain Injury
  • Penetrating Head Brain Injury
