Age Discrimination

Age discrimination is when a person is prejudice or stereotypes based upon another person’s age.  This form of discrimination typically occurs within the workplace and the victims tend to be people who are over the age of 40.  Age discrimination frequently affects employment decisions, as a company may choose not to hire a person, or fire a person solely based upon his/her age. 

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
In 1967, the Age Discrimination and Employment Act (ADEA) was passed in order to protect older workers from workplace discrimination.  The ADEA protects individuals who are over the age of 40 and forbids discrimination based upon a person’s age.  This Act protects both job applicants and employees and forbids discrimination related to aspects of employment including, but not limited to:

• benefits
• compensation
• layoffs
• promotions
• training
